How online earnings get counted, and why the counts disagree

Tally Press is an independent publisher. It covers a narrow subject: the measurement of income from online and platform work — where the figures come from, how they are collected, and what the people who collect them say about their own limits.

Every piece names the researchers behind the data it discusses and describes how the study was conducted. Where a finding is contested or where the authors flag a weakness in their own method, that appears in the same paragraph as the finding, not in a footnote.

  • Nothing is assumed about the reader

    Tally Press has no information about who is reading and makes no inference about anyone's occupation, income, employment situation or financial circumstances. Nothing published here is written as though addressed to a particular person's situation.

  • Sources are named, not gestured at

    Researchers, publication venue and year appear in the text of each entry. Figures that cannot be traced to a published source are left out rather than rounded, estimated or described vaguely.

  • Method limits are part of the finding

    Sampling frames, response rates and the authors' own stated caveats are reported alongside results. Where two studies disagree, both are described rather than one being selected.

  • No outcomes are described or implied

    This is descriptive coverage of research. Nothing here is a method, a plan or a set of instructions, and no result of any kind is offered or suggested.

What does Tally Press publish?
Written entries on published research about the measurement of income from online and platform work — how studies are designed, what they counted, and what their authors say the numbers do not cover.
How is the material accessed?
The entries on this site are open and require no account. Where a paid publication is offered, access details and terms are provided at the point of purchase and by email afterwards.
What is the refund period?
Thirty days from the date of purchase, handled by email. The full policy is on the refund page.
Are consultations available?
No. Tally Press does not offer consultations, coaching, mentoring, one-to-one sessions or individual review of any kind, paid or unpaid.
Why are there no testimonials?
Tally Press does not publish testimonials, reviews, case studies, success stories or before-and-after accounts, and does not solicit them. A publication about the difficulty of verifying self-reported earnings would be a poor place to print unverifiable claims.
What happens to data collected here?
The site collects the minimum needed to operate and to answer email. Categories of data, legal bases, retention and rights are described on the privacy page.
